Leaving the UK
Whether you are leaving the UK to work on a temporary basis or are emigrating permanently, there are lots of issues to consider.
We can advise you on your residency status and whether you will be due a tax refund in the year of your departure. We can also assist you in with completing the exit paperwork you will need to submit to the Inland Revenue.
Keeping Property in the UK
Often, people living oerseas rent out their UK property. This income is still taxable in the UK and if you do not complete the relevant paperwork, your letting agent is obliged to deduct tax from the gross rents.
We can make sure you are registered with the Inland Revenue to ensure that you receive your rental income in full and we can arrange the necessary Tax Returns for you, liaising directly with your letting agent if required. By getting your affairs in order you avoid having tax deducted and any worries of an investigation if you return to the UK.
Returning to the UK
As an expatriate considering returning to the UK there are a number of issues you need to address. It is important that the timing of your planned return to the UK does not compromise any tax advantages that you have as a result of your non-resident status. For example you may be able to dispose of property free of UK CGT if you have been non resident for a number of years. Missing such opportunities can be costly.
We can also help with other aspects of your return to the UK, including:
- Establishing exactly when your UK residence will recommence
- Bringing your tax affairs up to date and dealing with any outstanding Tax Returns
- Completing the entry paperwork you will need to submit to the Inland Revenue
- Advising on and arranging any tax refunds which may be due to you
